Thread: What -buntu is good for old machines?


hello everyone,

want use old laptop still working new fresh install of windowsxp home sp2. however, have decided have linux in internet browsing, mailing, , chat. however, wanted more writing documents, doing spreadsheets, lay-outing , graphics editing, making presentations. know tasks might ask out of old machine, but, possible?

open source applications alternative, or better commercial counterpart, have used far follows:
  • openoffice.org
  • writer
  • calc
  • impress
  • draw
  • inkscape
  • gimp


  • old machine's specs has intel celeron 1.3ghz 256mb ram , 40gb hd. have xubuntu 9.04 jaunty jackalope running somehow slow , many unwanted applications present , afraid uninstalling might corrupt os.

    please advise me if xubuntu choice considering applications wanted. there way tweak xubuntu make lighter? wanted tasks mentioned above , maybe couple of music files.

    try different desktop manager openbox.

    other thing can install terminal (cli install). can there 'more options' think, f4, on options on desktop installer. can drag in want. load desktop environment (xfce4 perhaps) , synaptics , should away.
