Thread: Wired/Wireless Connection not working Realtek/ Broadcom

i installed ubuntu 8.04 on compaq presario laptop , can't connect internet through wireless or lan.

hardware testing recognizes 2 network controllers:

broadcom corporation bcm4318 [airforce 1 54g] 802.11g wireless lan controller (rev 02)
realtek semiconductor co., ltd. rtl-8139/8139c/8139c+ (rev 10)

after internet test says "internet connection established"

browser can't connect websites. likewise ping works fine, can't figure out else do.

when computer starts , ethernet cable connected, attempts connect, shows 1 blue dot, fails.

on this? i'm sort of newb @ linux :/

to wireless working try this:

trying opening synaptic package manager , search fwcutter. should b43-fwcutter. (this extract broadcom 43xx firmware) mark install , apply.

if not there try terminal window:
(make sure using wired internet connection)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

go under system > administration > hardware drivers , make sure driver activated. if activated in top right hand corner icon wireless internet connection. click on connection use it.
make sure unplug wired connection.
