Thread: Unclean shutdown after power failure
hello everyone. had ubuntu 9.04 running on usb external hard drive connected asus eeepc. worked great until had power failure several hours. when start system , press esc repeatedly choose usb drive, ubuntu startup line appears @ bottom of screen message "unclean shutdown, checking drives" , counter begins counting appears disk sectors. when done checking, command line prompt appears , requests root user password. if type in, result command line prompt instead of loading ubuntu gui.
can tell me how restore ubuntu gui?

this long-standing problem , i've found solution. tried several ways view contents of usb external hard drive when attached different computers (mac, windows) , seemed ok. ready reformat usb drive , reinstall ubuntu when found following workaround. when maintenance shell says enter password or control-d not work. type "enter" , command line prompt. type fsck , system manual check of usb hard drive. patient , stay there confirm (type "y") when asks if want repair errors found. eventually, complete repair process. type command-d restart computer. worked me. hopefully, work well.
