Need opinions / suggestions on circuit design

hi all,

please see attached image.

i wish make switching "front end" linear regulator circuit. linear regulator conventional lm-317 booster transistor design.

the switching front end meant "roughly" control unregulated input linear regulator minimize power dissipation @ low output voltages.

note: whole thing (setting output voltage of linear side, current , voltage monitoring, control of switching front end, etc..) done arduino.

imagine adjustable power supply of 1.2 15 or 18 volts dc @ 10 amps or more. of course linear regulator needs @ least 22 25 volts input account regulator losses. now, setting regulator low voltage 3.3 , drawing 10 amperes causes regulator dissipate on 200 watts!

i  expect switching "front end"  to track output voltage setting (all arduino controlled) , provide "just enough" linear regulator work without heating entire house!  :)

i'm not great type of circuit design, appreciate input all.

is blatantly wrong? there better way it?  are components specified needed? did leave out needed? should use resistor or diode snub inductor doesn't "snap back" , injure mosfet? how should calculate best value inductor? best pwm frequency use - , why? should inductor air core, iron core or ferrite core? , why?

note: made circuit power supply project , i'm not happy way works. mosfet seems warmer expected (switching time problem?) , "teensy" bit of switching noise seems through output, despite amazing ac rejection capability of lm-317.

comments please. thank you!

i'd switching regulator chips. switch @ high frequencies , can control output voltage better arduino controlled can.
