i have same problem, , seems others have been well:
(check out links)

able find quick , dirty workaround install, specific fluxbox.
may able adapt xfce...

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...+problem+reset

i added line:

code:
xrandr -s 1024x768
to ~/.fluxbox/startup file

few other possible solutions:
it seems many people updating video drivers, or editing xorg.conf file helped...

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...+problem+reset

or trying this command in terminal:
code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...+problem+reset

if using older hardware, recommend fluxbox.
can added ubuntu or xubuntu,
, in experience used 70mb less ram xfce!

if need other or advise, ask.
