heart rate monitor using IR emitter and detector. NEWBIE

i pretty new @ arduino , have limited programming knowledge. have circuitry of detector set , have found code on line doesnt want do. have separate led blinking @ same rate pulse. im using code @ link http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=94690.0

when say,
do mean in sync pulse rate, or not in sync, same period
i.e sounds college project.
is there purpose it.
also did try searching arduino heart rate monitor
