ok bit more research , browsing logs found this

following common problem: (excerpted nvidia's docs)

q: x server fails start, , xorg log file contains error: "(ee) nvidia(0): failed initialize nvidia kernel module!"

a: nothing work if nvidia kernel module doesn't function properly. if see in x log file "(ee) nvidia(0): failed initialize nvidia kernel module!" there problem nvidia kernel module. first, should verify if installed rpm rpm built kernel using. should check module loaded ('/sbin/lsmod'); if not loaded try loading explicitly 'insmod' or 'modprobe' (be sure exit x server before installing new kernel module). if receive errors unresolved symbols, kernel module has been built using header files different kernel revision running. can explicitly control kernel header files used when building nvidia kernel module --kernel-include-dir option (see sh nvidia-linux-x86-1.0-4349.run --advanced-options details).

please note convention location of kernel header files changed approximately @ time of 2.4.0 kernel release, did location of kernel modules. if kernel module fails load properly, modprobe/insmod may trying load older kernel module (assuming you've upgraded). cd'ing directory new kernel module , doing 'insmod ./nvidia.o' may help.

cause may /dev/nvidia* device files may missing. recreate files run script (as root). assumes users have gui access in group "video"):

know telling me problem dont know start
how find out kernel module ?

regards
jim
