What is the purpose of the 5V pin on the arduino?

*see attachment project reference in post* got arduino uno part of vilros ultimate starter kit. came guide shows how many different beginner projects doesn't answer every question end having along way. 1 thing confused functionality of 5v pin on arduino. of projects in guide have done far, has me connect wire 5v pin positive power rail on breadboard. assumed supplied power leds on breadboard until discovered that, upon removing connection 5v pin breadboard, leds still remain lit. seems me power leds comes digital pins connected breadboard. can me understand and, if feeling generous, give me basic run down of flow of power through project attached in post. thank you!

in case of project in picture, 5v pin it's not necessary. person how writes manual, may attach connection education purpose only. believe 1 of first projects , idea "the student" used connect the 5v "+" rail of breadboard , gnd "-" rail.

the power (or current) leaves arduino board through digital outputs 2 9 passes through led form + - pins, passes through resistor , through "-" rail of breadboard gnd pin of arduino board.
