Output format question

the software company work has historically provided locally installed compiled files our products, considering changing server-based help. we'd still provide local file times when user offline, though, , i'm running trouble. we've been using *.chm files, nobody seems of them much. it's understanding appearance can't customized much, i've been looking toward using locally installed webhelp or flashhelp. i've encountered tremendous resistance developers, though, , not size-related reasons expected. rather, when build installation, must specify each , every file has changed. can't speak process, if accurate, can see how uncompiled format daunting!

so i'm looking sort of feedback can provide. has ever run particular objection? i've not heard of in these forums before. have suggestions on potential ways around this? missing compiled format should know about? has had experience packaging webhelp output single file, such perhaps self-extracting zip archive or ...? suggestions appreciated.

thanks,
melinda
